Park was not only born on Halloween, but now, she’s a full-fledged scream queen thanks to her teen slasher film, There’s Someone Inside Your House, which Netflix released a few weeks ago as part of its Halloween programming. Produced by Shawn Levy and James Wan, Park wrapped the Patrick Brice-directed film in October 2019, but returned to set in August 2020 to reshoot a few scenes, including the reveal of the masked killer. That’s a good enough prompt for a horror movie, especially one concerned with adolescent stuff like drugs, daddy issues, and dating. (Eh — probably a stretch.) Or maybe it’s just funny to watch a hooded menace gut a kid outed as the anonymous host of a grotesque white supremacist podcast.

"There's Someone Inside Your House" doesn't shy away from the fact that it was inspired by classic slasher films, although it does imbue itself with plenty of modern qualities to make it a fresh take on the genre. A significant aspect of the film is the diverse cast, which features BIPOC characters, a non-binary lead character, and openly gay characters — without making it a big deal or anything to be shocked by. A staple of slasher and murder-mystery films is the red herring, which seemingly leads you toward the killer, but in actuality distracts you from the truth. In "There's Someone Inside Your House," one of the most prominent red herrings is Makani's secret fling and the class outsider Ollie Larsson (Théodore Pellerin), who most of Makani's friends believe is the killer.

New slasher flick There's Someone Inside Your House is an unfocused, unsatisfying teenage body dropper that feels like a patchwork poser compared to other, better horror mysteries. It dresses itself up in a dozen gimmicks to make it seem like more than a copycat of superior projects, but just about everything going on here is underwhelming to a frustrating degree. One moment was at the table read for the first episode I did [season three, episode two, “Knighttime”].

That superficiality means that There’s Someone Inside Your House has to offer something unique in the slasher department to set itself apart, and results are uneven there, too. In an unnerving touch, the killer wears a 3D-printed copy of their latest victim’s face. That costuming choice underscores the killer’s ideology that each of the victims deserves death for their hypocrisy. But those slasher sequences lack the propulsive energy and over-the-top grotesquerie needed to jolt There’s Someone Inside Your House to life. There are bursts of blood from sliced-open tendons, torsos, and throats, but the artificiality of that candy-red gore extends to the whole contrived movie. The originality of Netflix’s recent horror offerings is questionable, which is to say that these movies often stand on the shoulders of their genre predecessors.

And if you're wondering why there's such a whopping irregularity there there, it's because the entire movie is unstable. Right down to the final reveal -- which is lazy, empty, and disappointing. At times, it feels like the film's trying to say something about "cancel culture," but once people who made genuine mistakes are lumped together with actual abusers and hate-mongers, the point dissolves into nothing.
At the corn maze, the killer sets fire to the maze with the football team inside, so Makani and her friends drive into the flames to help the football players escape. Darby and Alex help the players find their way out, while Ollie and Makani try to find Zach. They ultimately confront the killer, now wearing Skipper's face, who kills Skipper before revealing himself to be Zach. He explains to Makani that he killed everyone because he wanted to expose everyone's secrets in revenge for the bullying he endured for being the rich son of Skipper, whom the town disliked for making billions by selling and buying farms. Zach then reveals he intends to frame Makani for his crimes, but Ollie distracts him, allowing Makani to stab Zach, mortally wounding him. As Zach lies wounded and helpless, Makani rebukes his motives and denounces him for blaming and killing others for what's wrong when Zach himself is the real problem.
And while everyone else could hide their secrets, Zach's shame lay in the fact that he was born into privilege as a Sandford. Since he couldn't hide his last name, he was going to expose everyone else's true selves as well. He then said he'd planned to frame Makani for the murders, but if that had been Zach's plan all along, it wasn't very well-thought-out, since he had tried to kill her earlier in the movie. This Netflix horror is full of blood and drugs, with even some Nazi stuff thrown in there. And while the movie's conclusion is visually impressive, with the killer being revealed in a surprising twist against the backdrop of a blazing corn field, the murderer's motivations turned out to be a little hard to follow.
Makani is brought to the hospital to recover, and we finally learn her horrible secret — which also happens to be the reason why she moved from her home in Hawaii to start over. Part of the killer's modus operandi is revealing their victim's secrets before they're killed. For example, one of the victims is a violent homophobe, and another is a secret white supremacist. With this in mind, it makes sense for viewers to assume the perpetrator is seeking revenge from people who'd hurt them in the past. Jackson’s small town is Osborne, Kansas, where the locals enjoy the local high school’s football games with the same generic passion that they have for the town’s annual Halloween corn maze. Most of Osborne attends the game that Jackson should be playing in when he’s punished (to death) for a hazing ritual gone awry.
The Fear Street series nods so often at Scream, Friday the 13th, and The Witch that it fell short in developing an identity of its own. No One Gets Out Alive noticeably overlaps with His House in terms of reimagining a haunted house as a source of socially fraught terror and tension. And the streaming service’s latest, There’s Someone Inside Your House, is similarly indebted to films like Black Christmas, Haze, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which it explicitly references. There is one creepy conceit in There’s Someone Inside Your House, but that one genuinely spooky detail can’t counter the overall familiarity.
When Makani was attacked with a Taser later that night by someone who knew about her past, she immediately accused Ollie, and he was arrested. When he was released, he found Makani to try to talk to her, and as she ran away from Ollie, she saw the real killer stab Caleb. As a coda, we have a quick montage of Makani and Ollie going to prom together, and Makani’s remaining friends planning for their future, while Makani reads some of her poetry for the class at their graduation.
Makani sees that someone has spray-painted “SANFORD FAMILY BURNS” on the lockers, and (somehow) realizes that the killer is going to the corn maze next—where all her classmates are. Not that Brice and screenwriter Henry Gayden (“Shazam!”) don’t have a fine needle to thread. Ever since Wes Craven went meta with the genre he helped establish, it’s become uncool to make a slasher without winking at the audience at least once or twice. But while a bit of ironic detachment isn’t necessarily a hindrance, too many latter-day horror flicks’ attempts to show they’re in on the joke make it difficult to get invested in their stories.
A lot of the time, people can do comedy, but understanding a four-camera setup type of rhythm is very specific. I also think that’s why a lot of people couldn’t really understand the kitschiness of Santa Clarita Diet and its tone because that’s what we were playing into. Essentially, you were watching this family sitcom, but, “Oh shit, the wife is undead and eats people.” (Laughs.) So it was this loving husband [Timothy Olyphant] and wife [Drew Barrymore] and their kind of offbeat daughter [Liv Hewson].
